Show Theme "Workshop Wonders"
Judged by Larry & Judy Pumfrey

 Tropical Path by Charles Zetterberg

1ST PLACE - Tropical Path by Charles Zetterberg

Critique from the judge!

This painting is very painterly and expressive. It is well designed, with lots of variety. There seems to be an innovative orange under painting that comes through nicely, creating beautiful color vibrations with the blues in the painting. This works well with the use of the double compliments of red and green. Perhaps it would be even better if the shadows across the foreground were a little softer and spaced more unevenly.

Larry by Bruce Kotchey

2ND PLACE - Larry by Bruce Kotchey

Critique from the judge!

This charming painting touches the viewer. It goes beyond just rendering the subject matter and captures Larry’s personality. The scruffiness of the bear is captured with wonderful scruffy brushwork. The variety of line adds interest and movement The subdued greys showcase the bright oranges in the fur. Perhaps it would be even better if it were a tad more off centered.

A Full House (beats a pear) by Helen Mullins

3rd PLACE - A Full House (beats a pear) by Helen Mullins

Critique from the judge!

This painting has a lot of impact through the use of vibrant color against the subdued complementary blue grey background and foreground. It is filled with expressive brushstrokes The artist has put herself into it.¯ Perhaps it would be even better if there were a clearer center of interest.

Honorable Mentions

(in no particular order of merit)

Experiment by Susan Walsh

Experiment by Susan Walsh

Critique from the judge!

This painting has lots of color impact and keeps you intrigued by the wonderful experiment of stretching watercolor to its maximum with an excellent handling of wet into wet that let drips and slurries of color bleed into the foreground producing varied edges a successful experiment! Perhaps placing the flowers with less even space between them might make it even better.

 Abstract by Pat Van Leovan

Abstract by Pat Van Leuvan

Critique from the judge!

This abstract has good design elements that keeps your eye traveling through the painting. There is a great economy of the space in that if you remove any one item the design falters.Everything is well placed and necessary. Perhaps placing the angle on the left side of the painting higher or lower might have worked also.

On the Lam by Fred Wilder

On the Lam by Fred Wilder

Critique from the judge!

This whimsical self portrait beckons you. The eyes capture you and the mouth seems about to speak to you. It is a unique and individualist painting. The lost and found edges of the hair work very well. Perhaps if the head were placed a little off center it may work also.

 Butterfly by Nancy Davies

Butterfly by Nancy Davies

Critique from the judge!

This painting has a strong center of interest. The handling of the transparency of the glass balls shows a good mastery of the medium. Perhaps if the butterfly was placed away from the center and to the left a little bit it might work also!
