TREASURE ISLAND ART GUILD (TI-AG) - SEPTEMBER 2012 Show "Southern Living"

Judged by David Shankweiler

Our Judge for this show was David Shankweiler, Executive Director Beach Art Center, Indian Rocks Beach.

David writes :

Thank you for the opportunity to judge this exhibition of the members of the Treasure Island Art Guild. For me, judging a show is an exercise in why a work might seem like a winner at first, but another that went unnoticed in the beginning stands up for itself on further consideration. Trying to decide what is "best" is subjective. I have simply made observations of why I think the selected works stand up. Good art will speak to you, if you let it.

Thank you David for judging our show.

There is a strong sense here of happening upon a place when something stops you from the street. The work is festive and moody with a wonderful sense of color, blending and emerging detail that never becomes too literal. The dimensionality of the open storefront invites the viewer to explore further. Ultimately, the beauty of the work is in the use of the medium.

A superb palette of color is at work here, subdued and atmospheric until ‘pow’, when it counts. There is a strong sense of foreground, middle and background despite any obvious visual markers. The flowers dominate the landscape, one trying to project from the painting. Beautifully balanced composition.

Dang right it’s colorful. The artist has taken a typical Florida subject and turned up the fun factor with vibrant color. The scraping of layers of color and transparency in the background is evidence of control and confidence after a lot of experimentation. Bold.

An interesting layering of images offers the viewer a glimpse into the moody daydreams of the artist. The sky and palms are painted with a calm, subdued palette and a bold brush. The boat drifts in a dark, dank body of water, splashed in partial sun, showing intense color. Lines lay over the gunwales and drift in the water. One can sense the humid heat and scent of low water.

Inviting pastel of a primitive Florida bungalow and its welcoming tree, set in a sultry, hazy atmosphere. Very effective greens, grays and rose create the dense environment. One can almost hear singing cicadas and distant thunder.

This is an interesting manipulation of a nicely made photographic image. Everything but the chairs show a blurring – the chairs show a sharp focus on the rich weave and the fabric color and pattern that invite us to our comfort. Nice contrasts in color saturation.

Critique from the judge !

This small painting has a strong composition with well placed elements. The viewer’s eye is led by the palm tree and the path to the illuminated group of people in the lower left. Palm fronds against the sky show a practiced and effective brushwork. You keep looking and it gets better.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the entrants!
