MAY 2012 Honors:

The Cross Mixed Media by Kathleen Rabey

First place went to The Cross Mixed Media by Kathleen Rabey.

Critique from the judge !

This monoprint/mixed media piece showed a strong use of line as a design element. Although the color scheme was muted it still had interest. A touch more strategically placed color could have added even more interest. I would have liked to see the focal point less close to the center of the page.

The Fish Bowl Watercolor by Patricia McEntire
Second Place went to The Fish Bowl Watercolor by Patricia McEntire.

Critique from the judge !

The artist showed great skill at the wet, loose, impressionistic style of watercolor as well as the restraint to leave the background white. She showed great control of the medium. In this piece I would also have liked to see the piece less centered.

Tampa Bay Night Lights - Acrylic by Kathy Vanasse
Third Place went to Tampa Bay Night Lights - Acrylic by Kathy Vanasse.

Critique from the judge !

I thought the composition in this abstracted acrylic image was very good. The use of line, squiggly in this case, was a good added design element.

This was a thought piece. The collage technique used in a classical drawing was unique.

At the Beach Watercolor by Garry Bourlon

At the Beach Watercolor by Garry Bourlon

Critique from the judge !

This showed good control of a difficult medium. The representation of the waves helped to create a work that showed a commonly portrayed scene in a new way.

Closing comments from our judge:

Thank you for asking me to judge the May show. I selected 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Place plus 4 honorable mentions. I could have easily selected 3 more honorable mentions. When asked to judge a show the first thing I look for are those pieces with impact. The three winners were those pieces that stood out the most when I walked into the room. But they each had other strengths as well. Other paintings deserving kudos included: Serendipity Acrylic by Jan Chalmers, Double Vision- Digital Image by George Rabey, and Price of Paradise Watercolor by Patricia Marklin

Thank you John Stanley the father of our 2012 Scholarship Award Recipient Rowan Stanley for suppling photographs for this webpage.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the entrants!
