Critique from the judge !

A bold and refreshing look at a typical Florida theme. The use of color not only provides impact but movement. Well, done.

The perspective draws you into the painting. The movement of the woman and the red shoes lets your imagination run wild.

The posture and expression on the faces take you there, holding your breath waiting the decision.

Critique from the judge !

I like when color rules and sets the mood the artist wished to convey.

Honorable Mention: Sailing Home - Ambrose O'Leary, watercolor

Critique from the judge !

Although this painting has some technical flaws the artist captured a light that brought me back to it. That light drew me in and I was there.

Critique from the judge !

The minimal use of line and color created a strong design. Very creative framing.

Critique from the judge !

I'm captured by the gentle movement of the scene and intrigued by the reflections in the foreground. Where are they coming from?

Closing comments:

Comments from the judge: "I've been attending the Friday Portrait Group for several months and have appreciated the caliber of work from the TIAG members. I am honored to have been asked to jury this show and thank you for the opportunity. You, as a group did not make it this job easy for me.

First I do believe if there is a theme for the show it should be considered in the judging. Second, there are always more entries deserving of awards than there are awards. As a judge I look for technical knowledge of the medium and subject and good design. Of equal and at times greater weight is, can I feel why the artist chose the subject or tell something about the artist."

Some worthy of comment from the judge:

"No Body" - It made me laugh out loud. Fred Wilder, watercolor

"Prized Possession" - Reaches out and touches your heart. Pat Davis, acrylic

"Lion Summer" - A wonderfully spontaneous rendering of the King of the Jungle. Ellen Dargin-Knapp, acrylic

The judge also stated it was difficult to select between the three Award Winners. In her point system of judging all three tied. That meant she had to get "nit picky" (her words).

Photographs above were supplied by Joe Martin, many thanks Joe.

All this artwork and more is on display at the Treasure Island City Hall through the month of FEBRUARY 2012 at no charge. Open during normal business hours.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the entrants!
